Interesting facts about the herbs used

Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata)

Andrographis paniculata is an annual, branched herbaceous plant 30–110 cm tall, growing in moist shady locations. It originates from Taiwan, mainland China and India, and is commonly found throughout tropical and subtropical Asia, particularly in Indonesia. It is a part of Ayurvedic, Chinese and many other traditional Asian health care systems; today its use has spread worldwide thanks to its pronounced and diverse effects.

The part of the plant used is the leaf, which contains the terpenes andrographolide, andrographoside and andrographolactone, as well as various flavonoids and the polysaccharide arabinogalactan. Andrographis supports the body's defences and resistance, stimulates the immune system and acts as an antioxidant. It soothes irritated upper respiratory tracts. It supports liver function, digestion and body cleansing, and helps maintain joint flexibility and mobility. It contributes to the normal function of the circulatory system and has a beneficial effect on blood sugar levels. It contributes to pre-menstrual and menopausal comfort.

Sarsaparilla (Smilax officinalis)

Sarsaparilla is a perennial climbing plant whose spiny stems attach to other plants and grow up to 50 metres in length. It is a popular herb that has been used by the indigenous peoples of Central and South America for many centuries. In Europe its use dates back to approximately the 15th century. The root is used for supportive purposes and contains steroidal saponins, sarsaponin, smilasaponin, diosgenin, hirsutin, rhynchophyllin, mitraphyllin, phytosterols sitosterol, stigmasterol and polinastanol, as well as a range of phenolic substances and glycosides. It is rich in minerals calcium, copper, iron, iodine, manganese, potassium, chromium, selenium, zinc, as well as B vitamins and vitamins A, C and D. Smilax supports the excretory system and helps in cleansing the body.

Black Walnut (Juglans nigra)

This tall walnut species reaching a height of up to 23 m originates from the eastern coast of the USA, the Himalayas and Central Asia, and was cultivated in Europe as early as 100 BC. It is prized for its very hard wood, ideal for furniture and flooring manufacture, and its nutritionally valuable fruits have a distinctive flavour. In health care, extracts from the green hull are used, which contain diverse phenolic substances with strong antioxidant potential, the dominant one being juglone, with tannins also richly represented. According to the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, black walnut is effective against worms and other intestinal parasites. The potential effects of the black walnut hull are currently being intensively studied in laboratories around the world, and the existing findings are very promising for broader use of this plant in supportive care.

Alder

It is a native tree throughout much of Europe, in North Africa (Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria) and in the Caucasus, Iran and Turkey regions, and has also been introduced to North America. It grows up to 20 m tall, mainly along riverbanks and reservoirs. Alder wood is very suitable for making utility items; its bark, leaves and especially buds, which due to their high content of active substances are used to produce tinctures, are also used for their beneficial effects on the human body. The main components of the bark are lignans, tannins and phenolic glycosides, while the leaves are characterised by flavonoid glycosides, terpenoid substances and phytosterols. The history of using alder for health purposes is fairly long, especially in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine, and its effects on the body are in many respects unique. Alder helps maintain normal blood circulation including peripheral circulation, i.e. it supports blood flow to the limbs. It also stimulates brain activity and contributes to achieving optimal mental performance.

Chebulic Myrobalan (Terminalia chebula)

Terminalia, or black myrobalan, is an evergreen tree growing up to 25 metres tall, with a rounded crown of spreading branches. It occurs freely in the forests of India and surrounding countries at high altitudes (Himalayas) and produces valued fruit. It is a very important plant in Ayurveda, considered a means of promoting fearlessness and bringing wisdom. Its historical significance is underscored by the fact that the Buddha is often depicted in Tibetan sacred images with the fruit of black myrobalan in his hand. The tree is particularly prized as an excellent source of tannins, provides quality wood, and has a wide range of culinary and supportive uses. It is often cultivated, especially in India, for the tannin in the fruits, which represents up to 30% of their weight, and also for health use. The fruits contain minerals calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, as well as phenolic acids and flavonoids luteolin, rutin, quercetin and others. Terminalia contributes to maintaining purifying functions and helps in body purification. It stimulates immunity, the body's resistance and its natural defence systems.
